Ahead of Myself- X Ambassadors Review
It's good to listen to the explicit lyrics to hear what the musician's message really is. And with this song, the unfiltered lyrics aptly describe the song- a "shitty situation". Sam Harris sings about not being able to move on to a new lover, which sounds okay but turns bad with its gospel-like yeah babes and repetitious lyrics. The song starts off with an acoustic guitar and moves into weird RnB proto-horns and speedy and unnatural rap drum beats, which makes the song interesting but not particularly good. This combination of three instruments in different forms isn't a very X Ambassadors pop rock style, but more of a Sir Sly electronic indie feel, which Don't You Worry, Honey proved can either be very good or a mushed up failure.
This song comes after the okay Torches and good The Devil You Know, but reverts back to their Unsteady and VHS-like pop attributes instead of the good new pop rock of The Devil You Know. Genius, the best and most accurate but crowdsourced lyric website, said this was the lead single for X Ambassadors' next album, which could be a bad omen if they continued in this style instead of the style of The Devil You Know.
