Ride- ISLAND Review

Image
I'd been hearing about ISLAND for a while before I listened to A Place You Like EP, Girl EP and The Day I Die, the first single for their next album. They're pretty good, but they're still room for improvement, which the three singles (this being the third) for Feels Like Air have shown is coming. Try was a bit weird because it was synth based, pretty much the first ISLAND song to be like that, and feels like a chill, ISLAND remix of a random megahit. The Day I Die is a perfect alternative anthem, and feels destined for play on every alternative radio station from San Francisco to London, and is perfect for the task, if a bit slow. The riff is what I would already call classic ISLAND, very clean and almost palm muted, cascading down from somewhere far above. Then comes the powerful vocals of their frontman Rollo Doherty, which occasionally has to pull them out of a lethargy, but not in this song, which probably has their best drumbeat yet. Let me tell you, the riffs a

2in1! &Run/ Giver Remixes- Sir Sly and K.Flay Review

Image
I felt really let down when I learned K.Flay and Sir Sly where touring with each other, but then I learned that Sir Sly was leaving the tour before NYC (and pretty much the whole northeast). These two tracks have lessened this, both remixes of each other's song, released at the same time and begging to be reviewed together. &Run K.Flay remix is definitely improved in instrumentals, with some more natural guitars and basses and percussion samples. K.Flay trades verses with Landon Jacobs, and the chorus is backed with this weird guitar/ electronic thing. Let me just say it again- that bass really adds to Sir Sly's music- they normally don't use a real one due to a shortage of members, and it goes so well with their sound. The guitars do to, matching their almost surf rock music, as if the song was remixed by The Neighbourhood instead of K.flay. Giver Sir Sly remix adds some some pretty chill Sir Sly traditional live keyboards and shoegaze synths and electronic percus

Cheetah Tongue- The Wombats Review

Image
There's a massive amount of new singles to review, so bear with me. I'll probably pass the 100 post mark without even realizing it, and only be half done with all the reviews. The Wombats have released two song for their fourth album, Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life so far, the first, Lemon To a Knife Fight showing off their return to their original sound and the second, Turn even becoming a minor hit. Sadly, their tour was inconveniently planned, and I couldn't go, but based on those two songs and the rest of their discography I spent all of January 9th wishing I was there. The song with a riff that seems like the type that would belong to their new album, but then some electronic synthes and beats back it, harking back to Glitterbug. The song is a bit heavy in the amount of guitar compared to Glitterbug, but the electronic kicks and snaps bring up the question: just how much will The Wombats change? The lyrics for this song are very psychedelic for a band th

Handyman - AWOLNATION Review

Image
AWOLNATION has been changing their style, with the replacement of much of its' members, substituted by the members of IRONTOM, the raw (but not heavy) band AWOLNATION front man Aaron Bruno produced, and gaining a more natural and almost folksy sound. Their new album is called Here Come The Runts, and the first and third singles Passion and Miracle Man were good enough to convince me to buy tickets for their upcoming tour. Handyman is probably the promotional single, being the fourth and about a week away from the album drop. Handyman starts off with some laid-back acoustic guitar, finger-style, with some crooning in the background. Yes, that might seem boring, but it's actually decent, and crazy considering that previously, the only real instruments AWOLNATION used were heavily produced electric ones. The chorus bangs in as a bit of a surprise, with some great coordination between the electric guitar and acoustic guitar, and vocals that sound unlike Aaron Bruno (who's
