My Obsession- Pale Waves Review

Image
I started to listen to Pale Waves about two weeks ago, because they're on Dirty Hit(the same label as The 1975 and QTY, two solid bands), and Matty Healy constantly promotes them on his Twitter account. And for good reason, too: this The 1975 produced band has an excellent pop rock guitar based feel, much like The 1975 with a female vocalist. They've released four stellar singles so far(including this one), and have an debut EP, New Year's Eve, coming january of next year. The track starts with the riff that holds it together, a powerful but not overstated well-produced guitar. The first verse has the glittery background synth and electronic percussion that has come from The 1975's producing, which works well in this context but wouldn't by itself like sometimes happens in songs by The 1975. All of this back's Heather Baron-Gracie's multiple vulnerable confessions, including singing "I feel the same" as if she had never been asked. The second gu

Dare- The Hunna Review

I just started listening to The Hunna, and I'm kind of hooked. They mix energetic punk guitar with witty lyrics and a pop rock sensibility, for a mix(tape)(they released a few of those at one point- who knew you could transition from rap to pop punk so fast?) that's really winning. Their first album, 100, debuted in 2016 and featured standouts like She's Casual, You & Me, and We Could Be, which launched them into the top twenty album chart in the UK. This year, they released the single Summer, which pushed them in a bit more pop rock direction and sounded a bit like their label and tour(I'll try to get tickets) mates Coasts, who are also pretty good, edging that line between excellency like Bad Suns and trash like American Authors. The song starts building right away, with a swift drumbeat, muted but driving guitar, and lyrics that seem to crouch and almost whisper threats as they prepare to jump on top of you. All this build goes in to a gigantic and defiant chor

Miracle Man- AWOLNATION Review

Image
Here Come The Runts! The third single for this upcoming album(I'm getting tickets to their NYC show today), with Passion being excellent and Seven Sticks Of Dynamite being relatively lukewarm. This single had a pretty noteworthy video(for the audio)- a psychedelic old man rising from the depths of your YouTube screen! Isn't that just... weird. Whatever. The song starts with a basic drumbeat, augmented by a peculiar sound I assume is a percussive audio sample. It starts with a blast, the first breathless chorus and effortless lyrics about being insecure. The guitar is merely an accompaniment, and just complements the impressive rap rock that makes up most of the song. It certainly is more natural than their previous music, but is no less eclectic and isn't so natural it doesn't need electricity. The only time Aaron Bruno takes a break is the bridge, with its synth-assisted guitar grooves straight from the seventies or eighties, but much better than Journey could eve
