THE SCIENCE OF LETTING GO- Smallpools Review

Image result for the science of letting goSmallpools has never really come to my attention before. One of their most popular songs on Spotify was one of their song remixed by the Chainsmokers, which if you've read my review of Something Just Like This(Tokyo Remix), I don't think very highly of. The first Smallpools song I heard was Million Bucks, the song that starts off this EP. That song has okay verses, but it kills itself with choruses that try to mix Fireflies and and American Authors, with disastrous results. The rest of the EP fades into an electronic haze, with instrumentation and lyrics that make it obvious that when the Chainsmokers remixed their song they thought it was a gift from heaven, because they really wish they were the Chainsmokers. DJs & Porsches is grating, Centerfold seems to be promising but kills itself in a repetitious chorus and electronic swells, and Passenger Side and Mother do nothing to make the record any better. I think that this group's willingness to embrace electronics is good, but they should base their songs in guitar and bass, just like Phoenix. Not everyone has to take the Royal Blood rue of guitar and drums, but to be considered pop rock you should at least use them sometimes, or have good electronic music. If this is the pre-release for their new album, I don't think I want to review because it won't be much better, and I would save my ears some serious trouble.
