Top Five Coldplay Albums

Coldplay is one of the most successful bands of all time. For every single album they have at least two top 20 hits, and they've been doing it for almost 20 years and seven albums. That on its own is impressive, but if you consider that they were originally indie rock(they've changed a lot), it's even more impressive.

While not officially an album, this 27 minute companion piece to Viva La Vida full of B-sides and song that didn't make the cut for Viva La Vida is excellent in its own right. Life In Technicolor ii effectively expands on the original Life In Technicolor, the instrumental opener to Viva La Vida, with lyrics that propel the song to new heights. Glass Of Water really should have taken Cemeteries Of London's spot on Viva La Vida, with a jumpy guitar line and stadium ready flourishes, and Lost+ adds a good Jay Z verse to an already really good song. Lovers In Japan- Osaka Sun Mix doesn't really expand on Lovers In Japan, but cuts away the terrible In The Realm Of Love hidden track.

Coming after Chris Martin's "conscious uncoupling" with his marriage with actress Gwyneth Paltrow, this breakup album is very laid back and calm. It's based in the drums for nine songs with memorable lyrics, really beautiful songs that expand on Chris Martin's older piano ballads. A Sky Full Of Stars is a pretty good song, following straight from Mylo Xyloto into A head Full Of Dreams, but is EDM-y and thus a bit worse. None of the songs on there really match A Sky Full Of Stars' energy, or Mylo Xyloto's.

3- A Rush Of Blood To The Head
Parachutes was a bit boring, but A Rush Of Blood To The head expands on Coldplay's early indie rock/ Britpop sound, with some genuinely fantastic songs that all feel natural at five minutes long. The A-side is just amazing, with the excellent In My Place and the hits Clocks and The Scientist.

2- Mylo Xyloto
This album comes close to stealing the crown for best album, mainly driven by its winning pop rock formula of acoustic rhythm guitar, non electronic drums, electric guitar, and stadium ready synth keyboards. This album also has lots of really good songs, such as Hurts Like Heaven and Major Minus. The major issue with this album comes when Coldplay strays completely into pop, such as the terrible Princess of China and Paradise(an okay song, topped the UK charts).

While this album has not much consistency, this album really revitalized Coldplay after its X&Y mistake that was taking them nowhere. Really none of the songs on this album are bad, and its almost my favorite album ever. It also has commercial appeal with its megahit, Viva La Vida, which topped the US Hot 100. What's not to like?
