Black Flamingo- The Wombats Review

Image result for black flamingo the wombatsFinally, more music from The wombats as consolation for their poorly timed tour! Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life is set to come out this friday, and was preceded by the two pretty good singles Lemon To A Knife Fight and Cheetah Tongue, and the excellent turn. As you may know, they're first and third albums show a marked difference, but they've shown with all the singles so far that they have combined them- the raw guitar riffs of the first with the synthes and electronic drums of the third.

This one is similar to the last couple singles, but the mixture of heavily filtered guitars and backing vocals of the first part sounds heavily like a holdout from Glitterbug (their third album). After the basic Glitterbug intro, a good, hard guitar line backs the vaguely psychedelic lyrics that seem to the emerging pattern for BPWRYL. The chorus feels a bit like they wrote it awhile ago but never really finished, and doesn't feel fully developed. They were going in a good direction with this song, but I don't think they spent enough time finishing it up. The second verse and chorus are a bit better, but just highlight the shortcomings of the first. The bridge is a very weird electronic refrain, which The Wombats never even ventured into even at the height of Glitterbug. It does work with the song, but it's a bit surprising.

This is a decent song overall, kind of fitting in with the other singles and in no way ruining the album. It show that the album will have flaws (The Wombats are only human, not marsupial), but they are going toward a much better sound that may play itself out fully through the album. Now all I have to see is if I can catch them with Weezer and The Pixies, as I have some Pixies fan friends and Weezer is okay, but I don't know... I don't know how long it will take me to review the new album when it comes out, as T still have to review that AWOLNATION album., and a Franz Ferdinand album's coming soon.
