Lemon To A Knife Fight- The Wombats Review

Image
I have to admit, I'd never heard any of The Wombats songs before this song was recommended to me on various music platforms. I started listening, not just to this but to all of their songs, and I found out just how good they are. I would say they're a bit like a slightly nerdy British Phoenix, but they're also pretty unique. I listened to tons of their music, and I've almost been convinced to buy tickets to their next show. I would say I like This Modern Glitch the most, but I'm rambling and I should start the actual review now. The song starts with acoustic guitar replacing the keyboard chords normally introducing Wombats songs from This Modern Glitch and Glitterbug, and lyrics about a very... heated argument. The song's theme, of going into an argument you know you'll lose, is pretty original (as is the song's title) and the li ne "I've clawed my way out of here before/ But I keep on coming back" is an excellent summation  of the whole...

Things That Happened- Best Behavior Review

Image
I was recently blessed with the chance to go to a The Sherlocks concert, and even more blessed that Best Behavior was their opening act. Best Behavior is a New York City based Indie Rock band, and the $10 entrance fee was worth it just for their show, not to mention the excellent The Sherlocks set which came after it. So apparently this followup EP to 2015's Good Luck Bad Karma has been in the works since Say was released earlier this year, but I don't think they said it at their show and I never saw it on their channel until long after it was posted. The first song and title track, Things That Happened, launches the EP with a lo-fi whoop(which I am partial too ever since I was exposed to them earlier this year), then continues in a wordy but still relatively graceful verse backed by a driving bass. The buoyant chorus is catchy in a good way, not an ear worm, just good, and is well backed by the filtered guitar and possible synths. The second chorus makes masterful use of ...

Empires On Fire- BANNERS Review

Image
Wow, I found yet another great pop rock band. And this one is pretty good- a stadium pop rock band in the vein of Coldplay and Bastille, and clearly but not directly descended from U2. And now, we have the best piece of music they've ever made yet- Empires On Fire. The whole thing is excellent, from the opening strums of Someone To You to the closing guitar solo of Holy Ground. Someone to You starts off the EP with an anthemic universal message reminiscent of the best U2 and Coldplay, but with a unique modern pop rock spin. It's positively chock full of major chords, universal messages, and potential- it will definitely be a hit. It showcases BANNERS at its best, expertly crafted and ready for playing anywhere. Empires On Fire is a bit more subdued but still expertly crafted vaguely political song that would be excellent live, especially for its liberal use of guitar. Firefly is close to some of Coldplay's newer but more sedate songs(like Us Against The World) but is als...

I may not have thought his music was the best, but I got enjoyment out of it, and I respected his talent, ingenuity and position in his field. It's sad he died at only 21- rest in peace, Gustav Ahr.

HOLD ME TIGHT OR DON'T- Fall Out Boy Review

Image
Finally Fall Out Boy names a song in caps like it should be, but it's not appropriate because the lyrics are strangely not shouted or screamed. This is the fourth single for MANIA, the long delayed and much maligned upcoming Fall Out Boy album. The first two singles, Young And Menace and Champion, weren't so good, but The Last Of The real Ones almost made up for their peculiarities. My main tissue with this song is that Fall Out Boy is beginning to make such catchy overproduced earworms that they're basically meme music. beyond that though, it's a decent song, for a pop song. I like the mix of instrumentals, with it's breakdowns to drums, flute, ample bass(I can't tell if it's real), and occasional reggae guitar bits. It all fits together really well, and for a song obviously written for the radio, it's actually something I'd be able to listen to over and over, but I wouldn't listen to it on my free time. I think that it may actually become ...
